- Developing a great resume is only a matter of logic, organization
and focus. Your resume should have the following: contact information,
brief description of each company worked, title of the person whom
you reported to for each position, each exact title of the position, location
and dates worked, bullet points stating your main responsibilities
and finally bullet points stating 3 to 5 main accomplishments.
- We encourage reverse chronological order (starting with the most
recent job first), as this provides a clear picture of the positions
that you held, your responsibilities, exposure and achievements while
working in that role.
- If you are applying for a specific job, it is essential that you
present your resume with the skills, level of experience and education
as close as possible to match the job description, of course, always
maintaining truth in the information. Study the job requirements;
identify the skills that they are looking for; review your own experience
and skills; and then pick out those that are applicable to the position.
The key to doing it right is to understand carefully the requirements
of the employer and to demonstrate how your skills and experience can
bring value to the company.
- Lengthy resumes can turn off the recruiter, so be sure that yours
is concise and straight to the point.. Avoid too many combinations
of bold, underline and italics, tables, graphs. The use of strong, active
verbs is strongly encouraged: Managed, Directed, Developed, Organized….
- When hiring managers evaluate a possible candidate from a resume,
they look for clarity in the way the information is presented as
the presentation of a resume is viewed as a reflection of the personality
of the professional (avoid flippancy, careless errors, tactless remarks,
irrelevant or extraneous material, etc.)
- Management skills. It is important to include management or supervisory
roles that you had undertaken. Highlight soft skills that you acquired
such as skills in project management, HR management, and corporate
presentations (public-speaking). This will demonstrate your caliber as
a manager..
Resume Writing for IT Professionals
- Building a great information technology (IT) resume is a big job
but not necessarily a difficult thing to do. Below are several tips on
how to craft an effective IT resume.
- Don't be too lengthy (i.e. don’t include every work experience
and project that they were involved in).
- Maintain a consistent format. Some IT professionals use a combination
of formats, moving from chronological, reverse chronological, functional
and so on. Be sure that your resume format is consistent to avoid
confusing the employer.
- PROACTEL recommends using the reverse chronological order (starting
with the most recent job first), as this provides a clear picture
of the positions that you held, your responsibilities, exposure and achievements
while working in that role.
- We believe the functional format works well with IT resumes, particularly
for senior-level candidates with wide-ranging experience. Writing
a functional resume involves categorizing skills and experiences, and
putting related ones under the same heading, regardless of where or when
you had them.
- Emphasize what's important. Many IT professionals are not sure
which skills and experience to highlight and which ones not to.
- List the projects that you handled, highlighting the platform or
environment deployed and/or the skill set and programming languages
used. It would be useful to have a separate section called "Summary of Skills & Experience" where
you list your relevant IT skills and work experience, either in a
short paragraph or in bullet points. This way, the recruiter would be
able to identify your skill set at a glance.
- If you are a fresh graduate, list the projects handled as part
of your course work or external assignments that you handled on a
freelance basis. Relevant internship and vacation jobs also add value
to your resume.
- Regional exposure is a quality sought after by technology companies
hiring IT professionals. Remember to highlight your experience working
with markets in the region. If you had supported regional operations
on a 24/7 basis, do include this on your resume as this shows your
readiness to work beyond the "9-to-5" hours. Even if you do
not have prior 24/7 experiences but are willing to commit to such hours,
remember to state so in your resume as it could improve your employability.
