DSL
Digital Subscriber Line
- A technology for bringing high-bandwidth information to homes and small businesses over ordinary copper telephone lines. xDSL refers to different variations of DSL, such as ADSL, HDSL, and RADSL.
- A family of digital telecommunications protocols designed to allow high speed data communication over the existing copper telephone lines between end-users and telephone companies.
- Stands for digital subscriber line; it refers to the type of broadband connection that brings information to homes and businesses over ordinary copper telephone lines.
- DSL provides a separate channel for voice and fax, which means that phone calls and faxes can be carried at the same time high-speed data is flowing across the line.
E-BUSINESS / E-COMMERCE
Electronic Business
- Using the Internet to do business.
- E-business (electronic business), derived from such terms as "e-mail" and "e-commerce," is the conduct of business on the Internet, not only buying and selling but also servicing customers and collaborating with business partners.
- Business conducted using electronic media such as the Internet, other computer networks, wireless transmissions, etc.
ERP
Enterprise Resource Planning
Vendors: SAP, Baan, PeopleSoft, Siebel
- A collection of software programs that tie together an enterprise's various functions, such as human resources, finance, marketing and sales. The software also enables an analysis of the data to plan production, forecast sales and analyze quality.
- The technology solutions for large companies or other organizations to manage their resources, including customers, supplies, accounting, and other "back office" activities. Similar to Materials Resource Management (MRP) but broader in scope. See also: CRM
- Typically refers to the integration of all aspects of business functions within a company. This usually starts with financial and cost accounting, then extends to the integration of all functions.
HTML
HyperText Markup Language
- The document format language used on the World Wide Web. Web browsers read HTML and display the page.
- The language that specifies how text will be formatted and displayed in a web browser, such as Netscape or Internet Explorer. PE is built with HTML and javascript.
- A programming language used in the creation of Web pages. Language in which web pages are written.
- The coded format language used for creating hypertext documents on the World Wide Web and controlling how Web pages appear.
ICT
Information and Communications Technology
- Information and communications technology (see IT&T and telematics). Commonly used as a European industrial classification.
- Refers to both computer and communication technology.
- Technologies such as radio and the newer digital technologies like computers, satellite, mobile phones and the Internet.
- Computing and communications facilities and features that support teaching, learning and a range of activities in education (such as administration). The focus is on the subject being taught or studied or the organization being administered, rather than developing pupils' skills with and knowledge of the technologies themselves. (IT - information technology - comprises the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to use ICT appropriately and effectively.)
IP
Internet Protocol
- The main protocol that forms the basis of communication on the Internet.
- The Internet Protocol is the method by which data is sent from one computer to another on the Internet. Each computer (known as a host) on the Internet has at least one IP address that uniquely identifies it from all other computers on the Internet.
- An IP number is a numerical address consisting of four numbers separated by periods. Each IP address uniquely identifies a certain computer on the Internet. The domain name is used to make using them easier.
- IP by itself is something like the postal system. It allows you to address a package and drop it in the system, but there's no direct link between you and the recipient.
IP NETWORK
- A network in which transmission of information is done using IP protocol (eg Internet network).
- Means an infrastructure dedicated to the transport, routing and management of Internet protocol data.
LAN
Local Area Network
- Is a computer network covering a local area, like a home, office or small group of buildings such as a college. The topology of a network dictates its physical structure.
MAINFRAME
- A large computer, usually at a central location, which serves many users and is capable of turning out much work.
- A powerful multi-user computer capable of supporting many hundreds or thousands of users simultaneously.
- A large computer, usually one to which other computers and/or terminals are connected to share its resources and computing power.
- Called a mainframe because early computers occupied a number of metal frames, the main one of which contained the processor and memory.
- A high-level computer often shared by multiple users connected by individual terminals.
- They are typically used by large businesses and for scientific purposes.
